Hot dog and his master.

The old man and the dog.

While running at Taifeng Park near my hotel over the weekend, I chanced upon this man who was squatting (yeah, that’s Chinese talent for you) over his dog for at least 20 mins, lovingly brushing the long coat of his panting dog. The dog was completely enjoying the massage, and willingly let his master lift his leg, ONE BY ONE, as the master made sure he covered every inch and fold.

Contrary to what many say about China and dogs, I’ve actually seen many many pet lovers here.

It’s actually really heartening seeing sights of owners playing frisbee with their dogs, cuddling their cats, and even debating (seriously!) on National TV over the need to protect pets from being sold illegally. This program which I managed to caught in Shanghai was a 2-hour debate, where viewers even cast their votes after the debate on whether China should ban dogs and cat meat in restaurants. The fact is, if the French can eat horse and rabbit meat, why can’t the Chinese have their rights as well?

Anyway, I don’t wish to take sides because I have no time nor interest to fight for rights. I just think that the Chinese came from an embattled era of poverty and suffering – to one that is prospering a bit too rapidly for its own good. The people have only come to understand the concept of domestic animals 葱物, literally meaning pampered creatures. Give the Chinese time to re-learn ways of caring for their pets. Given single-child policies and the high costs of having children today, don’t be surprised to see a mushrooming of grooming stores and pet cafes across China very soon.

Meanwhile, my sis sent this pic of Tigros rolling all over my PJs back in Singapore. He misses me! *sob*
