Mega fog heralds the start of North China’s winter.

An empty horizon

Today is the foggiest day I had ever seen. It blanketed the entire Eco-City region.

This was taken from my company bus at 10am in the morning, and truth be told, I was scared.

We were driving in complete bleakness just following the faint blinking tail lights of the vehicle in front for about an hour, before we got caught in a massive traffic jam. It was basically a vehicle standstill where nobody could move.

After 30 mins, the cars started to pivot their cars 180deg in whatever empty patch they could find, and we broke loose off the hold up. But we weren’t out of the woods yet – and at one point we couldn’t see another vehicle nor the road.

I panicked at that point because I’d seen unfinished highways that lead straight into thin air. And i really prayed that we weren’t on one of those highways…

Anyway, our superman driver eventually found more cars heading back to the city Tanggu, and we evenutally wound up at the office. 3.5 hours journey.

Apparently this welcomes the winter – where fog and sleet are common on the roads here. My colleague related to me about how our bus slip-slided its way to the office last winter. Fun! Should i bring my skates or life-jacket?

Northern China’s winters are known to be incredibly harsh. I already noticed by the way the locals are preparing for it – i’ll show you more in another post.

But you know what’s worse than being stuck in a fog with no sign of life?  – Being stuck with a full bladder.

You should’ve seen my 400m dash to the loo after. I think even the fog cleared behind me.
